Threshold 2022
Threshold
‘Threshold’ is an installation comprising ceramic pillows and small ambiguous objects. It is concerned with the liminal state, from our small daily transitions or our life-changing ones, when we move from one state of being to another. We leave our safe ground, familiar place, or role but have not yet arrived at the new. Feeling disorientated and lost, we hold our memories close giving us hope as we seek the promise of a new dawn.
In 2020 we all found ourselves in a liminal state not knowing what would happen next, or who we might lose.
The pillow conjures up notions of rest, relaxation, intimacy, or home. It’s the place of our dreams. An empty pillow can also represent loss and absence. The imprint of a resting head leaves indexical marks, and where creases and indents can be the small containers where we keep our dreams and memories. For my small ‘creatures’ I use overfired bone china to give movement to the clay letting it become a source of surprise and an equal participant in the creation of my objects, mirroring the unknown of the journey ahead.
The pillow offers us a question, who was here? What were their thoughts? Other objects are more ambiguous and curious, vessel-like yet clearly providing little function. They are spaces for narrative to evolve and take root.
